The MPAA is blaming BitTorrent for the piracy of ROTS. This is kind of like blaming the car for deaths caused by drunken drivers, but how else are you going to preserve your hegemony?

I just love this quote though:

“Fans have been lined up for days to see Revenge of the Sith. To preserve the quality of movies for fans like these and so many others, we must stop these Internet thieves from illegally trading valuable copyrighted materials on-line.”

Uh, point of order? Those people ALREADY PAID TO SEE THE FRIGGING MOVIE! They make it sound as if, somehow, piracy has ripped some ineffable quality out of the film so that people
who don’t even know how to download a pirated film will have their experience lessened in some way. I suppose if a group of nasty movie pirates were to stand outside movies theaters and jump out at unsuspecting patrons with laptops playing the pirated film, well, that might be bad, however unlikely. I mean, come on MPAA, don’t you think you’re getting just a little overwrought about this?

The bottom line is this: You will never, ever, stop someone from using a new technology for theft. Ever. Reinvent your business model, suck it up. Stop treating your legitimate customers as current and futures thieves or you might just find that you have no more customers.
