Lesson #1: a degree is not a get out of jail free card.

It would seem to be common sense that a piece of paper that tells the world that you are smart and educated in one field would not automatically grant you authority in an unrelated field. Put it this way: you would hope that your MD would know what he was talking about when he told you that your blood pressure was too high and you needed to go on anti-hypertensives but you wouldn’t automatically take his word for it if he were to tell you that the reason your AC wasn’t working was because your condenser fan motor took a crap, right?

It is amazing, though, and perhaps a sign of the general scientific illiteracy gripping America, that this is a logical error made by the common man (and even by experts) all the time. Here’s a great example of an expert in modern history who confuses his own intelligence and capability as a historian with his authority as an evolutionary biologist.
