More cool del.icio.us stuff

September 13th, 2005 by Wood

-How to use del.icio.us to promote your podcast/vlog/whatever.

-Tagging something to share with another del.icio.us user (combine this with linkrolls and I can thing of a couple of cool things to do with it.

-And, since this weekend, someone owes me four ponies.

Additionally, I want to respond to the commenter who brought del.irio.us to my attention. I did check it out and I’d like to make a few observations:

1. It’s a del.icio.us clone. There’s no other way to say it. The name is similar, the overall look is very similar, they do similar things. More on this in a minute.

2. The feature set, so far as I can tell, is pretty identical to del.icio.us. The one significant feature difference between the two is that del.irio.us lets you make really long notes. That might be important for some, but I already have a blog. I can make notes just as long as I want. At the moment, I think there are probably far more hacks available for del.icio.us, though del.irio.us makes the claim that, because their code is open source, there will be lots of hacks and add-ons available soon.

3. del.irio.us, as I mentioned above, is open source. At the risk of being incinerated, let me beg the question: so?

No, no, hear me out. What does that really mean for me? del.icio.us and del.irio.us are both free right now, so there’s no savings for me. del.icio.us has more add-ons and hacks available, by a large margin, though I understand that might change. I’m not a programmer, so the idea of me writing my own add-ons or hacking del.irio.us to do what I want is a total non-starter. Warm and fuzzy feelings that one gets from supporting OSS? Sorry, go talk to Cory Doctorow. I am very much in the whatever works camp. I have Microsoft Office in the house. I’ve tried the OSS alternatives and I just don’t like them very much and my kid pretty much needs Office for school. I use shareware, I use freeware, I use payware and I use OSS stuff. The right tool for the job, sorta speaking. The bottom line is that there simply isn’t enough about del.irio.us that is different enough from del.icio.us for me to want to migrate yet again in less than a week. Remember, I spent most of the day doing that.

I’ll keep my eye on del.irio.us for the time being, just in case del.icio.us starts turning evil, but without a significant change in their offering, I doubt I’ll be moving soon. Just a suggestion guys: looking at what someone is doing, copying that and adding a feature does not a business model make.
